Eye diseases, conditions and eye disorders
There are many different eye diseases, conditions and disorders that can affect your eyesight, cause visual impairment and, ultimately, can lead to a complete loss of vision. Not all eye diseases and conditions have noticeable symptoms; this is why it is so imperative to have regular eye examinations and checkups as early detection often makes treatment far easier and more effective. Common symptoms of having an eyes disease include; seeing flashes of light, double or blurred vision, inflammation of the eye, excess fluid coming from the eye and unusual pain in the eye. Cataracts are formed due to a cross-linking of proteins within the crystalline lens structure of the eye. Since those early day trials, it is now recommended to apply the drops hourly throughout the day; 8, 9 10 times a day being ideal and, by doing so, the recommended course of cataracts treatment has now been effectively reduced down to just six weeks.
In the USA a cataract operation costs approximately $3,000 for one eye and $6,000 for both eyes. Eye surgeons will only operate on one eye at a time due to the 1% risk of failure as noted above. For those poor people who are left blind in one eye NAC eye drops are then the only option left available to treat their one remaining still good eye. New hopes for glaucoma sufferers in the fight against glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second commonest cause of blindness; cataracts being the first. Glaucoma has been nicknamed 'The sneak-thief of sight' as it is often a slow and gradual progression that leads to optic nerve damage and can therefore often go undetected until it is too late and damage has already been caused. This is why it is so important to have regular eye examinations and checkups by your opthamologist or eye specialist.
Gradually, over time, glaucoma will lead to the loss of ganglion cells in the retina of the eye which project the images we see to the brain. These cells convert the images that we see into very small electrical impulses which the brain then translates into what we perceive as our sight. When these cells become damaged by glaucoma our vision deteriorates and if left untreated will ultimately lead to blindness.
Now there is a new and exciting breakthrough in the treatment of glaucoma using the all natural compound N-Acetyl-Carnosine (or NAC for short). What is Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and can it be treated..?

The macula is a highly pigmented, oval-shaped, yellow coloured spot near to the centre of the retina of the eye and is approximately 5mm in diameter. Its yellow colour comes from its high concentrations of zeaxanthin and lutein which are yellow xanthophyll carotenoids. Because of this yellow colour it absorbs excess blue and ultraviolet light which acts as an effective sunblock, much the same as sunglasses, to protect this part of the retina from damage. As we age, a lack of these two essential carotenoids which we usually obtain through our diet causes the macular pigment density to lessen which, in turn, reduces it effectiveness as a sunblock and then the macular can become damaged. Daily supplementation with zeaxanthin and lutein will help to restore the macular pigment density and ensure that the macular is effectively protected against macular degeneration.
The macular has two or more layers of ganglion cells and, near its centre, is a small pit called the fovea which contains the largest concentration of cone cells within the eye; these are high acuity photoreceptors and are responsible for our central high resolution vision. Within the fovea lies the foveola which is approximately 0.35mm in diameter and in this area the cone cells are longer, slimmer and more densely packed than anywhere else in the retina which gives this area of the eye the highest possible visual acuity.
Macular degeneration is a disease caused by the progressive destruction of the macular. The texts books say that when the macular becomes damaged it is irreversible. Usually one eye will be affected before the other and is usually first noticed when straight lines start to appear wavy or distorted or the centre part of your vision becomes distorted. Other symptoms can include dark blurry areas or a complete white out appears in the centre of your vision and may also be accompanied by diminished or changed colour perception. As soon as these symptoms are noticed in one eye it is very highly recommended to start supplementation with zeaxanthin and lutein which should stop the remaining good eye from degenerating the same way. The most effective delivery mechanism is to use a sublingual zeaxanthin and lutein spray which is simply sprayed under the tongue and delivers the zeaxanthin and lutein directly to the eyes in approximately 2 minutes; this method is 900 times more effective than taking tablets or capsules.
