Statins: Miracle or Curse?

Have you read the stories proclaiming that the group of statin drugs is saving millions of lives? That is what the manufacturers want us to believe. Recent studies show that the truth could be very different.

Statins – why doctors prescribe them

If you have any of the following then the odds are that you have had your cholesterol checked: -

High blood pressure

Risk of heart attack

Risk of stroke

Heart disease

Diabetes

•	Plus many other

Lots of studies over the last few decades have shown a link between raised cholesterol levels and many of these common problems. The traditional theory is that all you have to do is reduce the Cholesterol level and those diseases will miraculously disappear.

Statins were then developed by the drug manufacturers and if their advertising is to be believed, statins help everyone who takes them. This advertising is misleading at best and an absolute con at worst.

Cholesterol Levels

The main flaw in the argument for reducing cholesterol is that cholesterol is an essential constituent in every cell and membrane in the body. It is the catalyst for numerous critical functions – without cholesterol we just wouldn’t be alive! It is produced by the liver and one of its main functions is to help fight against inflammation – the sort of inflammation that creates heart and blood problems. That’s right – if you have damaged arteries then your liver will produce an increased amount of cholesterol to try and repair the damage.

You will have high cholesterol levels for a reason. They aren’t the cause of the heart (or other) problems. They are an indication that all is not well. Removing the symptom does NOT cure the problem. In this case it might even make it worse!

Statins

Even if reducing cholesterol was a good route to take then are statins the way to do it? The manufacturers have produced all sorts of figures to show % reduction in risk and so on. A much clearer picture can be obtained if you consider the “Number To Treat” (NTT). The NTT is rarely published by the manufacturers but a few researchers at Nottingham University (UK) have come up with some remarkable figures. These have recently been published in the British Medical Journal with Professor Julia Hippisley-Cox as the lead author.

They studied data from over 2 million patients, including over 225,000 statin drug users. They found that for every 10,000 women being treated with statins there were only 271 fewer cases of heart disease. Thus the NTT is calculated as 1 fewer case for every 37 patients on the drug.

More importantly, the study looked at the side effects of taking statins. For every 10,000 women taking statins there were an additional 74 cases of liver damage, 23 cases of acute kidney failure, 39 cases of extreme muscle weakness and 307 cases of cataracts. The statins helped 271 people but harmed 443 people.

If you take statin drugs then you have a less than 3% chance of being helped but a greater than 4% chance of being harmed! The other 96% of users are merely helping increase the profits of the drug manufacturers.

Questions are Often More Important than Answers

Unfortunately, it will take many years for mainstream medical opinion to change and react to the latest findings. Your doctor will still want you to take statins. We recommend you ask a few specific questions: -

What is causing my Cholesterol to be high?

Will reducing my cholesterol cure that problem?

If not, how can we cure that problem?

What is the “Number to Treat” for the statin you want to prescribe?

What is the incidence of serious side effects for that drug?

What alternatives are there?

Cure the Problem – NOT the Symptom

You will be surprised at the number of alternative treatments available that get right to the centre of the problem rather than tinkering with cholesterol levels.

Our favourite for heart and arterial related diseases is a new product called Ethozyme. This is a combination of special enzymes and nutrients that gradually dissolve plaque build up on the artery walls, it repairs small cracks and fissures, it helps remove fibrous and fatty deposits and generally improves blood circulation. Two to four capsules daily for 6 months can clear most artery related conditions, dramatically reduce your risk of heart attack and/or stroke but without any side effects.

What the Doctors Don’t Tell You About Cholesterol

If you have ever suffered with heart or blood circulation problems; high blood pressure; diabetes or similar complaints then it is highly likely your doctor has taken a close look at your Cholesterol Levels. Invariably you will be told that they are too high and you need to change your diet and also advised you to start taking a class of medication called “statins”.

What is Cholesterol?

You possibly have been told that Cholesterol is evil and bad for you. This is such a harmful myth that you need to get out of your head straightaway. Cholesterol is a vital component of every cell membrane on Earth. Anything that lives (human, animal, plant etc.) needs cholesterol to survive. It is also critical in the production of hormones – oestrogen, testosterone, cortisone and lots of others. It is also essential in converting sunshine into Vitamin D.

Dr Ron Rosedale, a leading anti-aging doctor in the United States explains Cholesterol: -

“Notice please that LDL and HDL are lipoproteins — fats combined with proteins. There is only one cholesterol. There is no such thing as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ cholesterol.

Cholesterol is just cholesterol.

It combines with other fats and proteins to be carried through the bloodstream, since fat and our watery blood do not mix very well.

Fatty substances therefore must be shuttled to and from our tissues and cells using proteins. LDL and HDL are forms of proteins and are far from being just cholesterol.

In fact, we now know that there are many types of these fat and protein particles. LDL particles come in many sizes and large LDL particles are not a problem. Only the so-called small dense LDL particles can potentially be a problem, because they can squeeze through the lining of the arteries and if they oxidize, otherwise known as turning rancid, they can cause damage and inflammation.

Thus, you might say that there is ‘good LDL’ and ‘bad LDL.’

Also, some HDL particles are better than others. Knowing just your total cholesterol tells you very little. Even knowing your LDL and HDL levels will not tell you very much.”

Why Do Doctors Want to Reduce Your Cholesterol?

About 20 years ago research studies showed that there was a connection between the level of Cholesterol and the degree of inflammation in the body (high cholesterol with high inflammation and low cholesterol with low inflammation). It is also known that many heart diseases and strokes are a result of inflammation of the arteries leading to a build up of plaque and fibrous compounds. These lead to blockages or leakages in the blood supply network.

The erroneous conclusion from these studies was that high Cholesterol causes inflammation. Medical science then started to recommend reducing Cholesterol which led to the development of statins. Unfortunately, this assumption is totally wrong.

Instead of the Cholesterol causing the inflammation the truth is the virtual opposite – the inflammation causes the increase in Cholesterol!!!! The body senses the increase in inflammation and produces more Cholesterol to help combat the inflammation.

The Dangers of Lowering Cholesterol

Your body will have identified the inflammation well before your doctor and 99.9% of us will be producing increased Cholesterol to help fight the inflammation. Then your doctor prescribes drugs to lower the Cholesterol – missing the point entirely. The Cholesterol is there to do help your body heal and repair – and the drugs are fighting that.

Back to Dr Rosedale: -

“If excessive damage is occurring such that it is necessary to distribute extra cholesterol through the bloodstream, it would not seem very wise to merely lower the cholesterol and forget about why it is there in the first place.

It would seem much smarter to reduce the extra need for the cholesterol — the excessive damage that is occurring, the reason for the chronic inflammation.”

This is a classic example of modern science treating the symptom rather than the cause.

What Can You Do?

Firstly, if you are already taking medication to lower your Cholesterol then you need to change this. But don’t just stop taking your tablets. It is quite difficult to wean your body off certain statins and you must consult with your medical practitioner and develop the best way for you to stop.

Secondly, you need to work on reducing the inflammation. There is no “quick fix”. The inflammation and damage has probably been developing very slowly over a period of many years. The solution shouldn’t take that long but could well involve several months of gradual treatment. Diet is important but so is a new supplement, developed to help clear arteries and reduce inflammation in a natural way.

Foods to Avoid

Recent research has shown major flaws in the traditional recommendations to cut out butter, dairy, eggs, red meat and so on. The real enemy is processed food. These are the main contributors to inflammation: -

Eating lots of sugars and processed flour (grains)

Processed foods

Food cooked at high temperatures

Trans fats

Oxidised Cholesterol (overcooked eggs)

Smoking

Lack of exercise

Stress

Foods to Increase

Foods containing natural omega 3 (oily fish)

Increase intake of raw food – especially vegetables

Eat eggs lightly cooked with yolks intact (avoid scrambled)

Use olive oil or coconut oil in cooking

Avocados, raw nuts and seeds are great

Eat grass fed meat – preferably organic

Fresh salads

Increase exercise

New Inflammation Reduction – ethozyme.com

Ethozyme II™ is an all natural enzyme health supplement which has been specifically and scientifically formulated to provide a synergist, all-purpose formula to greatly enhance health & wellbeing and fight disease. It is very beneficial for many different health conditions, but is especially good at combating cardio vascular disease, atherosclerosis, plaque formation in the arteries, and thrombosis. This, in turn, greatly reduces the risk of stroke which is the world’s commonest cause of premature death.

A simple 6 months course of treatment removes years of arterial plaque build-up.

As the inflammation reduces then so will your production of Cholesterol. Not only will this please your doctor but it should also greatly reduce your risk of heart attack and/or stroke.

You can find out more about Ethozyme II™ and how to order it on – ethozyme.com

Make The Most of Sunshine

Are you confused by all the conflicting advice about sunshine? Some people will tell you to protect your skin with creams. Other people say you need Vitamin D and the best way to get it is by exposing your skin to the sun. Some say you stay out of the sun when it is at its highest whilst some say that is actually the best time to be out in the sunshine.

Add in all the talk about UVA and UVB rays and the latest information about skin cancer and the whole subject is a minefield.

The trouble is that virtually all of the comments above are technically correct – but they only tell you a small part of the full story. The sun cream manufacturers will tell you to always use cream – that will give you protection but you will also block a lot of other health benefits. The skin cancer specialists will probably be ultra cautious and advise you to stay out of the sun altogether – again, you would miss out on all the goodness that sunshine can give you.

What are the Benefits of Sunshine?

There are two main benefits of sunshine for humans: -

A gentle tan can actually make you feel good. It lifts your spirits and improves your general well-being.

More importantly is that sunshine helps your body create Vitamin D. Sunshine promotes the synthesis of Vitamin D in the skin. This encourages the absorption of calcium and phosphorous, which are so vital to many aspects of our health.

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin and some of the benefits are: -

Boosts the immune system and helps fight common colds

Can reduce the risk of developing Multiple sclerosis

Helps the brain function in later life

Linked to maintaining a healthy body weight

Can reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women

Can even help protect against low levels of radiation

Recently linked to lowering the risk of developing many cancers

Plus many more

As you can see, Vitamin D is extremely important.

If you live in the tropics all your body needs is 2 separate 15 minute sessions a week of unprotected sunshine and you can generate all the Vitamin D you need. Unfortunately, very few of us live in the tropics and can all be guilty of an “all or nothing” approach. We spend all winter covered up and then blitz the sunshine on the beach for 1 or maybe 2 weeks during the year. That isn’t very clever either.

Different Forms of Sunshine

The first thing to realise is that sunshine is actually made up of many different wavelengths – some we can see and some we can’t. The two main groups we shall discuss here are known as UVA and UVB rays. In general terms, the UVA rays colour your skin (and burn) whilst the UVB rays produce the Vitamin D.

If only nature arranged things so that we could get a little bit of UVA and UVB whenever the sun shone. This is where the problems begin and, as a result, most of the confusion. Unfortunately, these two sets of rays have different properties: -

UVA will be reduced by sun cream

UVA will transmit through normal glass

UVA will be reduced (but not eliminated) by cloud and pollution

UVA will give you a tan but can also burn and lead to skin cancer

UVB will also be reduced by sun cream

UVB will not transmit through glass

UVB will not transmit through cloud or pollution

UVB will reflect off the Ozone layer (and not reach you) if the sun is at an angle of less than 50 degrees

UVB synthesises Vitamin D and is good for you

Do you see some of the conflicts here?

Smother yourself in sun cream of a high factor and you won’t tan or receive Vitamin D.
Sit in the sun but behind glass (conservatory or window) and you will burn but not receive Vitamin D.
Expose your skin when the sun is lower than 50 degrees (morning, evening or all day at certain times of the year) and you will burn but not receive Vitamin D.
Expose your skin when the sun is at its highest and you will get all the Vitamin D you need but risk burning and damaging your skin.

The Best Way to Receive Your Sunshine

It is important for you to realise that everybody is slightly different and the following guidelines are just that – guidelines. At the start of summer you need to gently acclimatise your skin to sunshine. Once you have a golden glow your skin can tolerate more exposure but you should always avoid burning wherever possible.

The ideal situation is to sunbathe for 10 to 15 minutes at a time whilst the sun is above 50 degrees – this depends on where you are and the season but it is often only a couple of hours either side of noon. Do this 2 or 3 times a day with a gap of at least 30 minutes between sessions until you have acclimatised. Then you can consider slightly longer sessions and extending the time of day you sunbathe.

The important thing to remember is to make sure that you receive the beneficial UVB rays at the same time as you receive the tanning UVA rays. The health benefits of the UVB will often assist in protecting the skin from damage.

Take care if you are in the sun when it is lower than 50 degrees, or a cloudy day or you are behind glass. In these circumstances you will receive all the burning, damaging UVA rays but none of the healthy UVB rays. It is no secret that a high percentage of long distance drivers develop skin cancer on the arm next to the window.

If you use a sun-bed or tanning table then make sure it uses low pressure UV lamps that have a reasonable percentage of UVB. Avoid any solarium or tanning equipment that only uses UVA.

Stay Dirty

This next piece of advice isn’t quite so simple to achieve. The UVB rays help produce Vitamin D3, which is an oil soluble steroid hormone. It is formed on the skin when the UVB ray comes into contact with a cholesterol derivative in your skin and converts it to Vitamin D3. The bad news is that the newly formed Vitamin D3 can take a long time to actually be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream where it is needed. This can take up to 48 hours!

Washing with soap will remove any Vitamin D from the surface of your skin. A simple rinse with clean water is not a problem. A full scrub with powerful soap or shower gel is a problem. For hygiene reasons you should still use soap under the arms and groin area but try to avoid soaping the larger areas that have been exposed to the sun – especially on a daily basis.

What if you live in the North (or extreme South) or have very delicate skin?

A city like Chicago is known for its harsh winters but extremely warm summers. But if the sun is out during winter then it is just not possible to receive UVB rays and produce Vitamin D. In fact UVB rays don’t appear until March 25th and they have completely gone by middle of September. Even at noon, the sun is too low for the UVB rays to penetrate the Ozone layer for 6 months of the year.

Our body needs a regular supply of Vitamin D yet historically, it has been extremely difficult to supplement. Many products might contain Vitamin D but not in a form that can be absorbed and used. The bio-availability of Vitamin D in supplements has been a major problem – but all that is set to change. Ethos have developed natural marine phytoplankton that has wide ranging health benefits. Yes, it even includes Vitamin D (technically Vitamin D3) in a form that is readily absorbed by the body and starts working within minutes of being taken.

Ethos Marine Phytoplankton – marinephytoplankton.net

Marine phytoplankton provides a rare and complete food that gives the body virtually all of the raw materials that it needs, in one single source, to produce healthy new cells and neuro-chemicals for the brain, such as dopamine and serotonum. Because it works at the deepest level of the cell, it seems to work for a wide variety of diseases and imbalances including many chronic illnesses. What makes phytoplankton so unique is the exceptionally high success rate that has been experienced in overcoming a variety of health conditions and chronic diseases, thus enabling the body to heal itself much faster. We believe this is because it contains all of the raw materials necessary, in one source, in near perfect proportions. Like a chemical reaction, various components have to exist at the same time, otherwise the reaction will not happen. A typical example is the neurochemical serotonum, which requires eight different vitamins and minerals for the body to produce. If just one is missing, the body cannot produce it.

Ethos marine phytoplankton contains over 65 nutritional properties, including all of the amino acids, essential fats, vitamins, key minerals and trace elements, rare anti-oxidants, phospholipids, electrolytes, nucleic acids, enzymes and co-enzymes. It is a living food that carries an electrical frequency that works with the intelligence of the body. It is believed that it’s the combination and proportion of elements and nutrients that make phytoplankton so unique and so effective at enabling cellular regeneration and therefore natural healing. All of its elements and electrolytes are almost exactly tailor-made for the human body.

High amongst these components is Vitamin D. This makes Ethos Marine Phytoplankton one of only a handful of products worldwide that contains Vitamin D in a readily useable form.

The Easy Way To Reverse Cataracts Naturally

A tremendous amount of money, time and effort is spent each year in trying to overcome cataracts by surgical means. This is extremely profitable for the corporations involved but very expensive for ordinary people like you and me. What the doctors don’t tell you is that there are now several natural, non-invasive treatments available that cost a mere fraction of the equivalent surgery.

Millions of people develop serious cataracts every year. Most of us think it only happens to older people but it can also become a problem for youngsters. Our pets aren’t immune either.

Conventional Cataract Treatment

The initial symptoms are cloudy vision and being sensitive to extreme lights. Many people describe it as trying to see in a dense fog. It is caused by certain proteins crystallising and forming a glaze over the lens of the eye.

The accepted medical advice is surgery, but this can cost up to $5000 (US dollars) per eye and beyond the budget of most people. This treatment involves mild sedation or even full anaesthetic drugs which have their own inherent dangers. Even then, the treatment is not guaranteed and is rarely 100% effective and permanent.

Alternative Cataract Treatments

Please note that we do not have personal experience of all of these treatments. However, they have been recommended to us by very reliable sources – but if you have any doubts then please do your own research on the Internet.

Triphala Tea Eyewash. – use 2 or 3 times daily, this is recommended by the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico – http://www.scribd.com/doc/59411153/Cataract-Data

Drink Wheatgrass Juice on a daily basis. This was reported in Biogerontology – Jan 1st, 2005.

Organic Cider Vinegar. Mix 1/3 teaspoon of the cider vinegar with 4 ounces of distilled water. Hold with eyes closed for 2 minutes, two or three times daily.

Shihu-Yeguang is a Chinese botanical, often available from professional acupuncturists. http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/cataracts-and-botanical-remedies

Herbal Recipe. Herbal eyebright is prepared by master herbalist Dr John Christopher. http://www.herballegacy.com/Herbal_Eyebright.html

NEW FOCUS – the simplest, yet most effective treatment we have come across. http://ethosworld.eu/store/new-focus-zeaxanthin-lutein-sublingual-mouth-spray.html

NEW FOCUS Sublingual Spray

This is a simple to use spray – just direct it under your tongue and the fine spray is very quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to your eyes. The main ingredients are Zeaxanthin and Lutein – two naturally occurring carotenoids that have been proven to strengthen the eyes and improve vision. Not only is it successful with cataracts, New Focus is also recommended for protection against Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration.

Full details of NEW FOCUS and how to obtain it can be found – http://ethosworld.eu/store/new-focus-zeaxanthin-lutein-sublingual-mouth-spray.html

L-Carnosine’s Fight Against Premature Aging

L-Carnosine was first discovered in Russia in 1900 and, right up until very recently, has been a curiosity known only to a few leading biochemists. Several recent studies have shown that it has many excellent health benefits. It also has superb anti-aging properties which the latest studies have apportioned to its unique ability to protect telomeres in the body; telomeres protect the end of chromosomes within the body from deterioration and help to stop them fusing with other neighbouring chromosomes.

Telomeres are small ‘zipper-like’ capsules which bind together the genetic material of our DNA and enable precise cellular reproduction. Each time a cell replicates, its telomere shortens and this diminishes the overall life-expectancy of the cell; so it can be likened to a biological counter which counts the number of times that the cell has already replicated. When there is no more telomere left then the cell has come to the end of its life-cycle and then cell-death quickly ensues. A recent study, published in the journal of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis & Vascular Biology, has found a direct coloration between the shortening of the telomere and the risk of developing heart disease, the chances of suffering a heart attack as well as premature death from all other causes. So, by studying telomere length, we can now help to diagnose and predict these things in advance before they happen.

It is now possible, with a simple blood test, to examine aging by measuring a person’s telomere length to reveal their body’s overall cellular wear and tear. A nineteen year long study was carried out by researchers from The University of Copenhagen in Denmark, on 20,000 Danes, to analyse their DNA and, more specifically, to measure their telomere length as an established measurement of cellular aging. The results demonstrated that when the telomere length was short, the risk of heart attack was increased by as much as 50% and the chances of premature death was increased by as much as 25%.

Smoking and obesity cause systemic inflammation and are a direct cause of shortening of the telomere. Besides improving lifestyle risks and diet, daily supplementation with L-Carnosine is a very effective way to not only block telomere shortening, but to start to actually lengthen them again as well. This very effectively reduces the effects of aging and increase longevity.

L-Carnosine’s Many Health Benefits

Buffers Lactic Acid buffering (helps to reduce muscle “burn”).

Very Powerful Super-Antioxidant (Quenches even the most destructive free radicals: the hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals, superoxide, and singlet oxygen.

Potent Aldehyde scavenger (Detoxification of cytotoxic alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes).

Prevents Glycation end-products (AGE) (A process where sugar and protein molecules combine to form a tangled mess of tissue).

Prevents Carbonylation (Carbonylation is a pathological step in the age-related degradation of the body’s proteins).

Neurotransmitter (Chemicals that transmit signals from a neuron to a target cell across a synapse in the brain).

Chelates Ionic Heavy Metals (flush toxins from the body).

Powerful regulator of zinc and copper concentrations in nerve cells.

Prevents skin collagen cross-linking which leads to a loss of elasticity and wrinkles.

This previously little know super nutrient is about to become the leader in field in the fight against aging for those people who want to grow old slower and more gracefully whilst also helping to protect their bodies against all degenerative diseases.

L-Carnosine is known to work in synergy with other biological antioxidants; such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and selenium and also with antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. This means that it has its own excellent antioxidant properties in its own right, but that it also acts with other antioxidant substances and systems to give a much greater overall benefit than the sum total of all of their separate effects combined. It also helps prevent carbonylation by “mopping up” other toxic substances, which are inevitable produced as a side effect of metabolism, such as aldehydes. These substances damage body proteins and the fats within cell membranes by irreversibly reacting with them to form biologically useless substances.

It also helps to prevent glycation; if glucose is present in high concentrations, it can also react with body proteins to form more biologically useless substances.

L-Carnosine blocks, or at least radically slows down, all of these degenerative processes and hence it very effectively slows down the effects of aging.

Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease & Senile Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be caused by abnormal versions of normal brain proteins called prions. A prion is a naturally occurring protein in its normal form but, by folding into an aberrant shape, it then turns into a rogue agent. This rogue agent then co-opts other normal prions into also becoming rogue agents themselves and thus the disease begins to spread. The trigger to change shape is caused by various forms of damage to these proteins. L-Carnosine crosses the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to be very effective at preventing this damage from happening.

Besides this, the excellent chelating properties that carnosine possesses also help to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Patient’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease usually have excessive levels of copper, zinc and other ionic metals present in their brains. It is thought that the excessive levels of these metals play an important role in the degenerative change of the normal proteins, called amyloid, to become the abnormal ones which are called beta-amyloid. L-Carnosine’s great ability to “mop-up” and remove these excessive amounts of metals within the brain slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and also helps to reduce the symptoms. Studies have shown that L-Carnosine also protects nerve cells from damage as well as from the degenerative changes associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.

L-Carnosine is also an excellent cognitive enhancer and is a very effective way to help to train your brain. It increases both short-term and long-term memory function and promotes much sharper and clearer thinking.

What do you do when there is no more medicine?

Several major European drug companies are considering restricting supplies of critical medicines to Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain (known as PIGS countries). The on going financial turmoil in Europe is having disturbing repercussions across a wide range of industries. Now we learn that part of the financial “belt-tightening” across Europe is being achieved by not paying bills.

Research by the Swiss Information Group – www.swissinfo.ch reveals that major Pharmaceutical Companies, such as Novartis and Roche are owed approximately €15 billion by Eurozone countries – mainly Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain. Some of these countries are delaying payment by as much as 3 years!

From the swissinfo.ch report

“Farmaindustria, the Spanish Pharmaceutical Industry Association, said that the Spanish health system last December owed €6.3 billion to pharma companies – up 36 per cent on 2010.

On average late bills were paid after 525 days, rising to 800 days for certain autonomous regions.

“In Spain, there are several hospitals that have not paid their bills for up to three years. Roche is evaluating a change to its commercial policy for the worst paying hospitals. This would mean to set a credit limit per hospital and drugs would only be delivered if the credit limit were not exceeded,” said a spokesperson.

The report continues…

In 2011 Roche reduced the supply of certain medicines to Greek hospitals.

Novartis is also examining whether to make changes to supply terms and conditions.

Deteriorating credit and economic conditions and other factors in these countries have resulted in, and may continue to result in an increase in the average length of time that it takes to collect these accounts receivable and may require us to re-evaluate the collectability of these receivables in future periods.

For now the company is focusing on the issue of cash payments.

In case you didn’t catch all that

4 countries in Europe owe nearly €15 billion (that is $20,000,000,000 US dollars) to the main drug companies.

Some of this debt is 3 years old.

Roche is already limiting certain supplies to Greek hospitals.

This debt is growing at an alarming rate.

All major drug companies are looking at ways to reduce the debt.

What does this mean?

Like any business, the drug companies need to be paid for items they supply. This pays the wages, funds research for the future, pays dividends to shareholders and many other things. So what happens when they aren’t paid? Something has to give: –

It could mean reduced profits – the shareholders won’t like that.

Close factories and reduce staff – they won’t like that;

Cut back on research – fewer medicines for the future.

Stop supplying – which reduces volume.

Become more aggressive on chasing payment – insist on cash in advance.

If you have been following the turmoil with the Eurozone and the bailouts you don’t need us to tell you that the PIGS (countries with biggest debts) just don’t have any money. That is why they are so behind with payments. These countries will either go bankrupt (in which case the bills will never be paid) or the will struggle with a difficult financial situation for many years. Either way, they will not be able to pay for medicines in advance or reduce the outstanding debts.

Very quickly the current restrictions on supply to certain Greek hospitals will spread across all the PIGS countries and possibly even further afield. Millions of people used to regular medication will be refused treatment. Hospitals and local medical services will be the next to suffer – what can they do without medicines?

Who knows where this could spread to?

How do they afford it?

We have been racking our brains to think of any other industry that has been owed $20 billion for up to 3 years and can just sit back and keep trading as if there was nothing wrong. Would your cash flow suffer if you were owed $20 billion? So would ours – in fact we would be like most other businesses in the world and struggle if we were owed a minute fraction of that. Maybe this is the final proof that these companies make so much profit they don’t really miss the odd $20 billion. Whilst they claim to have all our interests at heart they are no more than very efficient cash machines. They are cash machines that have consistently charged high prices and marketed medicines of dubious effectiveness that the Western world has been queuing up to buy. Well maybe not much longer.

If you live in one of the PIGS countries then you really have our sympathies. Not only are you facing years of austerity and cut backs but you are also going to have the added problems of losing your access to all sorts of medicines.

Things aren’t going to be that much better for everyone else. Now that the drug companies have been exposed as giant profit making organisations we anticipate there will be quite a backlash. Think about it. You have been paying (either directly or indirectly through taxes) an additional premium for your medicines just so that Spain and Italy (and Portugal and Greece) don’t have to pay for theirs! Someone has to pay to ensure the drug companies still make a healthy (pun intended) profit.

What Happens Next?

In the meantime literally billions of people in Asia are watching all this from a safe distance. For thousands of years their medicines and healing treatments have been based on experience and practices handed down over generations. They use nutrition and body energy and natural healing techniques that have worked effectively for centuries.

The very fact that you are reading this indicates you are probably aware that many of these treatments and remedies are becoming available in the Western World – and usually at a fraction of the cost of the “Big Pharma” medicines. We anticipate a dramatic surge in interest of these nutritional and energy based treatments.

What You Should Do

If you already suffer from an illness or injury then investigate – do some research and see what help is available without resorting to expensive medicines. Work out a strategy to prepare yourself for the sudden loss of your conventional medication. Start now – don’t wait until it is too late.

If you are looking on behalf of someone else or merely planning for the future then have a long look at all the measures you can take to help prevent such illnesses – especially if you (or your family) have a specific history. It could be that a simple all round nutrition supplement is all you are likely to need.

Where to Look

Your first stop should be the internet. Start with our own group Ethos. Here you will find some of the purest and finest products available worldwide – specially designed to give maximum results and protection. But there are lots of other great companies out there who specialise in other areas. Unfortunately, there are some companies that offer diluted or ineffective products at ridiculously cheap prices – be cautious – quality usually has a small cost implication.

Start preparing now – “Failing to Plan is exactly the same as Planning to Fail”

Post Script – This article was written end February 2012 as the Eurozone Financial Crisis was reaching a peak. Greece was waiting to see if it would receive Bailout 02. Portugal, Italy and Spain were watching closely to see what financial assistance they might receive in the coming months. It “might” all be sorted very quickly. However, most experts think it could also degenerate very quickly with financial chaos flooding across Europe and even affecting USA and Asia. Whatever happens – we wish you good luck.

22/02/2012

Dear Peter

I’ve ordered a few boxes of the Bright Eyes Glaucoma drops and I’ve been using the drops for a month now. I will only have an IOP test in a few weeks time to see if there is any improvement there. I also suffered from central serous retinopathy in the past and, as a result, suffer from a very small grey blind spot (scars) in each eye. Today, all of a sudden whilst working on my computer I realised that the spots in both eyes are smaller and not so ‘blind’ any more! There is a definate improvement and I’m very curious to know if you have received any similar feedback regarding CSR scar tissue improving with the use of these drops?

Francois P, South Africa

Dear Francois

Thank you for your latest order and for sharing your wonderful story with us. Yes, the drops were originally developed for cataracts but due to the unique properties of the N-Acetyl-Carnosine (NAC) in them they also help virtually all other eye conditions too. The unique thing about N-Acetyl-Carnosine is that it works at a cellular level to repair damage and rejuvenate cells. We also have it available as an oral supplement and then it works its same magic all around the body. It is the only truly anti-aging product out there on the market.

We have lots of amazing feedback from customers and even have people with Macular Degeneration claiming that their sight has come back which the texts books say is impossible but, as far as we are aware, there have never been any clinical trials carried out with this unique combination of products.

All the very best

Hi Peter

I ‘ve been checking my ‘blind spots’ since the discovery yesterday and it is not my imagination – it is definitely improving! I’ve been using the drops at a rate of at least 8-10x, sometimes eve more per day. That’s why I ordered another full course.

Kind regards

‘my vision improved by a whole diopter and my peripheral vision improved 100%’

I have used your drops for the past 6 months for cataracts. I am 55 years old. For two weeks I used 6 drops daily in each eye and then reduced to one drop daily in the eve. Went for my follow up eye exam and discovered my vision improved by a whole diopter and my peripheral vision improved 100% since my last exam 6 months ago. I can only contribute this to your fantastic product. I am continuing to use them daily to maintain these results. If you feel that is not necessary please let me know. I value your opinions and have recommended your product to all my friends with the same condition. Thank you so much for developing this alternative to cataract surgery. I really did not want to have that cataracts surgery at my so called young age.

Have a wonderful day.

Janet, USA

Dear Janet

If your eyesight is 20/20 again then there is no longer any need to continue with the drops; but we do still recommend that everyone should use just one or two drops a day as a general maintenance does to maintain good eye health and to help stop and other eye diseases from ever developing in the future.

Thank you once again for taking the time and trouble to write in and let us know about your excellent results…

All the very best

How Safe is Cancer Screening? Following an earlier article “Some Cancer Cures May do More Harm Than Good” we were asked for our views on screening for breast cancer (Mammogram).
How Safe is Cancer Screening?

Following an earlier article “Some Cancer Cures May do More Harm Than Good” we were asked for our views on screening for breast cancer (Mammogram). If you think this would be easy then think again. There is a massive amount of information, loads of official studies, reviews by the NHS in UK and FDA in US, articles in Medical Journals – but we are struggling to find a definitive answer. We could bore you with pages and pages of conflicting “expert” opinion. Or we can quickly “cut to the chase” and give you a brief overview of the situation as we see it.

On the Left – in favour of screening

•	World Health Organisation (WHO)
•	National Health Service (NHS – UK only)
•	Food and Drug Administration (FDA – USA only)
•	Plus many other highly respected establishments around the world.

The following is an extract from the NHS website: -

The World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has reported that screening could cut deaths from breast cancer by about 35% among women who are regularly screened. The 2010 NHS breast screening programme annual review estimates that UK breast screening saves 1,400 lives each year. For every 400 women screened over a 10 year period, one less woman dies from breast cancer than if they had not been screened. This means that 1 in 8 fewer women between 50 to 70 years of age die from breast cancer in the UK.

We thought we were fairly good at mathematics but have to admit that these figures baffled us. When we asked for clarification the response was “woolly” to say the least. This is what we think they mean:

If you consider 400 women aged 50 to 70 in UK, with NO screening, then over a 10 year period 8 of them will die from breast cancer.

However, if those same women were screened on a regular basis the early detection of breast cancer would mean that only 7 of the 400 would die from breast cancer. 1 life would be saved over the 10 year period.

The figures then fall apart when you look at the claimed 1400 lives saved a year. This implies that over 5.5 million women take part in the screening programme yet other figures give the figure at fewer than 2 million.

We cannot find any information to back up the WHO claim of 35%.

Official figures from the USA are just as confusing. A 2009 study concluded that mammograms do save lives and at a rate that increased with age – in line with overall breast cancer risk. This USA data shows: -

A woman between the ages 55 and 70 has a 6% chance of developing breast cancer.

There is approximately 1% chance of breast cancer causing her death.

Regular screening from age 50 onwards would save the life of 1.8 women for every 1000 screened consistently for 15 years.

One researcher estimates that 2,970 women must be screened once to save one life.

When you look behind the headline figures from these organisations the reductions in death seem quite small – unless, of course, you are the one who has been saved! Although small, they are significant and we can understand why so many people are in favour of mass screening.

Until, you look at the other figures that aren’t published quite so often: -

On the Right – those against screening

•	A growing number of research establishments.
•	Several medical consultant authorities.
•	Most Therapists
•	Try a “google” search – mammogram risks – you will be spoilt for choice

We have studied lots of these reports/claims/websites and the risks associated with mammograms can be narrowed down into 3 main categories: -

The damage caused by the actual mammogram itself.

The risk of “false positives” – diagnosis where the mammogram indicated a cancer tumour in error.

The risk of anxiety, stress and depression for women called for follow up treatment that proves to be unnecessary.

1) Mammogram risks

A mammogram is a special form of X-ray – some experts calculate that it is equivalent to 6 conventional x-rays. However, in the UK the mammogram procedure actually takes 2 shots of each breast (one from above and one from the side) so a screening is equivalent to 12 x-rays. This is not a concern until you understand that breast tissue is susceptible to damage from x-rays. There are lots of claims and counter claims but the general consensus is: -

a) The younger you are the more damage could be caused. This is why mammogram screening is restricted to over 50 years (but plans are afoot to introduce it for younger women in UK).

b) A family history of breast cancer can mean that certain gene mutations can be present but hidden. The mammogram procedure can actually trigger these mutations to become active cancer growths. Women with these “silent mutations” should stay well away from mammograms – yet they are often the very same women who are encouraged to have regular screening. This is the ultimate “Catch-22” scenario.

c)	Mammography also compresses the breasts tightly (and often painfully), which could lead to a lethal spread of cancerous cells should they be present.

d)	This comment from a female oncology nurse is possibly only half joking – “mammograms were clearly invented by men. Ask any man if he would expose his private parts, squeeze them between two cold metal plates and subject them to ionizing radiation once a year on the vague chance it might show he had cancer and he’d say I was mad. At best!”

2) False Positives

The mammogram detects abnormalities in the breast tissue. Experts study the data and assess the likelihood of these abnormalities being cancerous. For obvious reasons they err on the side of caution. Further tests can then be carried out to reject obvious non-cancerous cases. This reduces the actual cancer cases to approximately 10 women in 2000 who are then treated for breast cancer (mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation or whatever). In September 2006 an earlier report from the Nordic Cochrane Centre found that for every 2,000 women invited to have screening mammograms, just one would have their life prolonged, but 10 would endure unnecessary and potentially devastating treatment! Professor Peter Gozsche, who led the research along with Karsten Jorgensen, said that “many women were being treated for slow-growing cancers that might never have developed to cause concern if they had not been picked up in the screening.”

The Cochrane Study concluded that the reduction in risk of dying from breast cancer for women in a screening programme was 0.05% (1 in 2000). But the risk of dying for a woman being screened and then actually treated unnecessarily for a slow growing or benign cancer rose to a staggering 30%. This indicated that for every 2000 women screened, 1 would have their life prolonged, 10 would receive unnecessary treatment and 3 of those 10 would die prematurely as a result of that treatment!

The Cochrane Studies and Reports have not been denied by WHO, NHS or FDA – they have just been ignored.

3) Additional Stress

Cochrane also compiled data from numerous studies around the world. They also found that for every 2,000 women screened no less than 200 would be called back for further tests and investigation. These women have weeks or months of unnecessary worry purely because of the high number of false positive results. These are finding problems that aren’t really problems that unwittingly create a tremendous amount of stress and fear.

What Do We Recommend?

Unfortunately the situation is not clear cut. There are, however, several important results of the research that may just help you make a decision one way or the other: -

•	Women under 50 should not have mammograms. There is widespread agreement on this.
•	Women with a family history of breast cancer are at a much higher risk of being damaged by the mammogram process.
•	Women who have given birth and successfully breast fed their children have a much lower risk of developing breast cancer in the first place. Mammograms are probably not a good idea.
•	The damage from mammograms is cumulative – the risk increases the more often the mammogram. A screening programme involving a test once every 3 years should be preferred to an annual test.
•	Screening beyond the age of 70 is not considered effective.
•	If you do opt for screening and get called back for further tests then insist on a full investigation before agreeing to surgery.

What Else Can You Do?

Despite the massive screening programmes the majority of breast cancer occurrences are first spotted by feeling a small lump in the breast. In our opinion this remains the best method and self examination should be encouraged amongst all women, regardless of age.

The next thing is to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in the first place. There are lots of dietary methods of strengthening your resistance to all cancers – not merely breast cancer. One of the most promising is the combination of Ethos Marine Phytoplankton and Ethos Endymion. We needed to know more so we had a close look at the claims and the research behind them. Here are our findings: -

The study compared the impact of a diet rich in antioxidants in mice prone to developing retinal damage in old age – similar to many humans. This particular study provided the antioxidants by means of red grapes – a well known source. The mice fed the grape enriched diet had significantly more protection against oxidative damage of the retina, preventing blindness.

Dr Finnemann from Fordham University in New York commented “The protective effect of the grapes in this study was remarkable, offering a benefit for vision at old age even if the grapes were consumed only at a young age.”

Another conclusion of the study “A diet rich in antioxidants, especially those provided by lifelong consumption of red grapes are directly beneficial to retinal health and function”.

Did you spot the weaknesses in the claims?

a)	The study was carried out on mice. There is a good chance that similar results will be obtained with humans – but that is not guaranteed. In practice trials and results with humans are many years away.
b)	The best results came from a lifelong consumption of red grapes. Good results were also obtained if the grapes were fed only whilst the mice were young.

But What About Us?

Things are looking good for all the mice that have been eating red grapes since they were babies. As for humans – how many of you have eaten several ounces/grams of red grapes every day since you were born? Neither have we.

There is Some Good News

Our own research confirms that regular intake of antioxidants can be a great help in protecting against AMD and other retinal problems. In fact, we know of many cases where eye damage from AMD has been successfully reversed using a special combination of antioxidants. And you don’t have to have been taking them throughout your life to benefit – but the earlier you start then the better is your protection.

Eat plenty of red grapes by all means – they are very good for you and taste delicious. But you also need regular top ups of powerful antioxidants. Many research studies have found that Lutein and Zeaxanthin are essential when addressing eye problems. The simplest and most effective method is by using a new product called NEW FOCUS. This is a simple “under the tongue” spray. The manufacturers of NEW FOCUS sublingual spray claim that the Zeaxanthin and Lutein will be delivered to the eye within 2 minutes of applying the spray. This is simple to use and helps protect against Diabetic Retinopathy, AMD, Glaucoma and many other eye disorders. Full details of NEW FOCUS and how to obtain it can be found – http://ethosworld.eu/store/new-focus-zeaxanthin-lutein-sublingual-mouth-spray.html
